NATIONAL HISTORY |
|
Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc., has a history that extends deeper and more profoundly than names and dates. We are founded on the principles of individuality, pride, trust, dignity, womanhood, and love in order to achieve a unique sisterhood. We welcome all women interested in sharing, as well as, maintaining their cultural customs, values, and beliefs.
Chi Upsilon Sigma has been in existence since April 29, 1980, incepted on the New Brunswick Campus of Rutgers-the State University of New Jersey. Our Founders are 7 Latinas who had the desire to form an organization to promote leadership among the Latino community. More importantly, it was their desire to create a sisterhood - a place away from home in which the members could feel the strong sense of family which is such a strong force in the Latino culture. Over the years we have grown to include women of a variety of ethnicities and cultures. Our common calling is a respect for one another and the ideals of our Founding Mothers, rooted in individuality, loyalty, pride, womanhood, and appreciation of the Latino culture and all its aspects.
We pride ourselves in our mission to educate not only ourselves, but the community as well. One of our organizational goals is the promotion of political, educational, cultural, and social awareness. Another is a dedication to servicing the community and those in need. We accomplish these goals through programming and workshops, philanthropies and fundraising, as well as hands on community service.
On a social level, CUS has worked in conjunction with a variety of organizations, from fellow Latino Greeks to non-Greek letter organizations and clubs. We host functions such as mixers, parties, and step exhibitions.
As an organization, CUS is one of the first Latino Greek Letter organizations that has performed or competed in National Step Shows.
The women of Chi Upsilon Sigma consider our sisterhood to be a lifelong commitment, not only to the organization, but also to each other. Ours is the flame that burns eternal and a bond that joins us to one another FOREVER. |
